about

"One of my favourite tape series in recent years... a wonderful multimedia project.”—Lippy Kid, Electronic Odyssey

The third EP in the Japan series celebrates Osaka’s unique culture and effervescent personality and remembers a rural retreat in neighbouring Hyōgo.

1. A Different Kind of Light is a theme for a city so big that its edges are blurred, with a downtown that fizzes with sci-fi intensity. The track bathes in the neon that illuminates with an effervescence reflecting the cultural uniqueness of Osakans.

2. Sauce! highlights the Osakan sense of humour and love of unfussy sauce-soaked dishes like okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Osakans shed a tear for their wallets when they say, “eat yourself to ruin”.

3. Grand Sumo captures day twelve of the Spring tournament and our chance to see our favourites up close. The track features elderly superfans welcoming top-division rikishi into the building, the ring-entering ceremony, thrilling bouts and cheering crowds.

4. Of Fields and Forests is a song about how memories feel and find their place in time. It recounts travelling to neighbouring Hyōgo prefecture to stay with the family of our friend, Yūsuke, for two days of rural peace that filled us with optimism. The track closes with Yūsuke describing his family home and setting.

Site Nonsite is a project researching and documenting a connection to place. Site is the source, a place rich with scattered information and experiences; Nonsite is the resulting document, a multimedia abstraction of that place. (These guiding thoughts are adapted from land artist Robert Smithson’s 1968 Theory of Non-Sites.)
